Harvard has designed an open website production platform for acacemics and scholars: “OpenScholar” — sortof like WordPress but with a heavy focus on the things scholars would want: links to classes, publications page, importing bibliographic data from things like Endnote, clean, “elegant” themes (that’s their word, one they used in the video a couple of times), etc.

Will this be the turning point for faculty to begin setting up and maintaining their own pages?  Academia in its current form is so solitary, so independent, that a system like this could potentially meld perfectly with that ethos: each individual professor tends his or her own page, but the structure is such that no one has to get bogged down in the weeds of page design, template construction, or learning code.  And yet there is room for a great degree of originality and creativity if an individual wants/needs that.

Time will tell.
